The Philosophy Behind Ditching Yellow Paint
Control Resonant director Mikael Kasurinen explained during the Dropping Frames podcast why developer Remedy deliberately chose to avoid heavy-handed guidance tools like yellow paint in their open-world design.
Kasurinen stated that it is crucial for players to feel like active participants who figure out the convoluted world on their own, rather than blindly following flashing arrows or pre-determined paths. While acknowledging the risk of alienating players who prefer a guided experience, Remedy believes this friction creates a more rewarding and sticky gameplay loop.
Industry Shift Away from Waypoints
Remedy's design philosophy aligns with other studios, such as Invoke Studios. General Manager Dominic Guay noted at Gamescom 2026 that Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons also ditched traditional quest waypoints to encourage genuine world exploration and interaction with NPCs.
Critical Reception
Control Resonant scored an 8/10 in IGN's official review, praised as a stellar addition to the Remedyverse for its inventive world-building and paranatural intrigue.
